Reserve Shiraz With A New French Twist

The latest vintage of Fox Creek’s famous, highly awarded and much sought after wine, the 2001 Reserve Shiraz has been released — with a difference.

Fox Creek senior winemaker Dan Hills describes the wine as “An outstanding wine made in the typical solid, strong and flavoursome style as seen in previous vintages.”

But there’s a change. Traditionally, the Reserve Shiraz is matured in 100 percent American oak. This vintage Dan, along with winemaker Tony Walker, have introduced a proportion of new and one year old French oak.

“We have introduced new dimensions of flavour, aroma, texture and complexity to the wine” explains Dan. “Winemaking is a little like philosophy. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion and really there is no right and wrong, just a difference.”

The 2001 Reserve Shiraz is a typical example of Fox Creek’s flagship wine. It is a dark red-black colour with crimson edges. The aromas and flavours are complex with chocolate, blackberry and licorice from the fruit complimented with a little allspice and vanilla from barrel maturation. As with previous vintages this wine shows great acid balance and solid, but fine tannins giving a wine of extraordinary depth and length.

The fruit for the Reserve Shiraz is sourced entirely from a the Willows Block at the Fox Creek Vineyards in McLaren Vale, an eight-acre block of Shiraz vines planted in 1989.

This is the eighth consecutive vintage of the Reserve Shiraz. To celebrate the excellent heritage of the Reserve Shiraz, the team at Fox Creek has encased the first six vintages (1994 -1999) of the wine into a stylish box set that is accompanied by a hard-back book with history and tasting notes about the wine.

2001 Fox Creek Reserve Shiraz is available from discerning retailers nationally or by calling Fox Creek on 08-8556-2403. RRP is $65.
